Brotherhoodis a continuation so you won't get the plot without finishing AC2 but you can just look it up. Brotherhood still follows Ezio and you have the same abilities as before,

So AC 2 started pretty soon after development of AC 1 ended. Brotherhood released in 2010, with noticeably better lighting and textures in a lot of areas, similar length (albeit only in Rome, but it’s the same size if not bigger than all the maps in AC 2), and Revelations released the year after with major changes in character models, textures, UI, and more,
